What Is a Multigenerational Bernedoodle?

A multigenerational Bernedoodle, often called a multigen Bernedoodle, is a Bernedoodle produced from later-generation parents rather than a first-generation Bernese Mountain Dog and Poodle cross. At Shady Oak Doodles, we specialize in multigenerational Bernedoodles and carefully select our parent dogs for health, temperament, structure, size and coat traits.

Understanding Bernedoodle Generations

  • F1 Bernedoodle – A first-generation Bernedoodle is a Bernese Mountain Dog crossed with a Poodle.
  • F1b Bernedoodle – An F1 Bernedoodle bred back to a Poodle. Coat type, furnishings and shedding can vary depending on the genetics inherited by each puppy.
  • F2 Bernedoodle – An F1 Bernedoodle bred to another F1 Bernedoodle. This generation can produce considerable variation in coat type, furnishings and other traits.
  • Multigenerational Bernedoodle – A later-generation Bernedoodle produced from carefully selected Bernedoodle or compatible Doodle parentage. Multigenerational breeding allows us to make more intentional selections for temperament, size, structure and coat traits.

Our breeding dogs undergo genetic testing, and we carefully plan each pairing with the goal of producing healthy, well-tempered Bernedoodles with the beautiful non-shedding coats our program is known for.

What Sizes Do Bernedoodles Come In?

Shady Oak Doodles breeds Bernedoodles in several sizes, giving families options ranging from very small companion dogs to traditional Standard Bernedoodles.

  • Munchkin Bernedoodles: 15–25 pounds
  • Micro Mini Bernedoodles: 12–20 pounds
  • Mini Bernedoodles: 20–40 pounds
  • Medium Bernedoodles: 40–60 pounds
  • Standard Bernedoodles: 50–90 pounds

Adult weights are approximate, and individual puppies may mature slightly above or below these ranges depending on genetics.

What Is a Munchkin Bernedoodle?

Our Munchkin Bernedoodle is a smaller companion-sized Bernedoodle created by crossing a Bernedoodle with a Cavapoo. This combination brings together Bernese Mountain Dog, Poodle and Cavalier King Charles Spaniel ancestry.

Munchkin Bernedoodles generally mature around 15–25 pounds. They are designed for families who love the look and personality of a Bernedoodle but prefer a smaller dog that is easier to travel with, carry and accommodate in everyday life.

What Is the Temperament of a Bernedoodle?

Bernedoodles are loved for their affectionate, social and family-oriented personalities. They are typically playful, intelligent and eager to be involved in everyday family life. Their Poodle ancestry contributes intelligence and trainability, while the Bernese Mountain Dog is known for its affectionate and devoted nature.

Temperament is influenced by both genetics and early development. At Shady Oak Doodles, temperament is an important consideration when selecting our breeding dogs and planning each pairing.

What Coat Types Do Bernedoodles Have?

Bernedoodles can have straight, loose-wavy, wavy or curly coats depending on their genetics. At Shady Oak Doodles, our Bernedoodles have non-shedding coats, and we use coat genetics when planning our breeding pairs.

What Colors Do Bernedoodles Come In?

Bernedoodles can be produced in a wide variety of beautiful colors and patterns. Our puppies may include traditional black tri, blue merle tri, or red and white tuxedo with bother blue or brown eyes.

Choosing the right Bernedoodle often starts with finding the size and temperament that best fits your family. Shady Oak Doodles offers several Bernedoodle sizes, including Micro Mini, Munchkin, Mini, Medium and Standard Bernedoodles. Because we have been developing our Multigen Bernedoodle lines for generations, we are able to carefully select breeding pairs with health, temperament, structure and coat quality in mind. Our breeding dogs undergo extensive genetic and health testing, including OFA testing, and our puppies are raised with hands-on care and early socialization. Every puppy receives a veterinary examination before placement and leaves Shady Oak Doodles with our 24-month health guarantee. In addition to our traditional eight-week-old Bernedoodle puppies, we offer Started Puppies for families looking for an older puppy with an established training foundation. Our Started Puppy program includes crate training, potty training, leash skills, basic obedience, socialization, car rides and learning to settle appropriately in both home and public environments.
